A Quizzing League

This an idea I've had ever since class 9 or something. A Quiz League. Actually it's more like an F-1 Season, but what the hell.
I guess its better to start with around 5 colleges which have a good standing in quizzing circles and have a future. At complete random, say; NSIT, DCE, St.Stephen's, BVCOE and Ramjas.

This is a very, very raw idea. But try this:

Day 1: Qualifying round . Top 32 Teams qualify. They are divided into eight groups of four.
By holding two to four quizzes simultaneously, you have the eight quizzes from which the top two teams qualify.
Day 2: The top 16 are divided into groups of 4 again. They again quiz with the top two of each quiz making the semi-finals. The top two teams of each semi-final make the final.

Points System:
Top 8 of qualifying round get same points as in a F-1 GP.
5 points per round won till final. 3 for second.
Final:
Winner - 10
Second - 8
Third - 6
Fourth - 4
Maximum Possible Points per Venue: 10+3*5+10= 35

Calender:
October 13-14: NSIT
October 27-28: DCE
December 22-23: St. Stephen's
February 1-2: BVCOE
February 22-23: Ramjas

Either you have a central quiz association like the KQA, which will conduct all quizzes or the quiz society of each college will conduct the quiz. But the responsibility of conducting the quiz will be alloted before the season begins. If we can get some sponsors and the support of the colleges, this thing actually has some potential.

IMS IQ 2007.

The St. Stephen's team that won IQ 2007 (Delhi) ought to call themselves "Phoenix". In the two biggest quizzes held so far (Panache and this one), they originally didn't make the final round only for them to fight and realize that their qualifying round papers hadn't been checked. They came second at Panache and yesterday, quizzed the way Federer plays tennis.
Check this, at the end of the quiz the two Stephens teams had a combined score of 215 points with the next highest team being somewhere around 50! IIT Roorkee were demolished IIT Delhi made a guest appearance and I frankly don't care who else made it.
Myself and the BVCOE guys stayed on despite us not qualifying... BVCOE's Team sh(Nimi+Nite+Dine) scored 7 out of 30 in the qualifiers, self and a couple of guys who I managed to drag along from ASE-hole Land (a fourth year dude called Ankit, who was pretty good and a second year guy called Bhanush, who kept calling me "Sir" on the phone!!) scored 11(could have been 13!) and the cut-off was 13.5!!

The quiz was good. Some genuinely awesome questions with a few weird ones thrown in, but it was an event where I can't say that I had wasted my time attending it.
Justin, Arka and Abhinav from St.Stephens get to participate in the All-India Semis and Finals (if they make it!) which is aboard a Star Cruise Liner off Goa and which will be broadcast on CNBC TV-18.

TATA Crucible 2007

TATA Crucible 2007 is an All-India Biz Quiz. It's gonna be REAL tough apparently. Quiz Master is Pickbrain Balasubramanium, so... be ready for screwed up questions. He is better than *cough* pr0n-n00b *cough*, but then again, anyone is!

Ramjas Fest

The Ramjas College Annual festival is taking place on 1st,2nd and 3rd of February 2007. I have been ensured by the organisers that there will be a quiz taking place.

I will be hosting the quiz, starting from the prelims all the way to the finals. Prize money will be a little less than the first quiz we hosted at Ramjas in november. Most probably it will be 1500 1000 and 500. I ensure you that the money will be given then and there.

It appears that the guys never learn, (Then again, that's the whole point of DU*, to NOT LEARN!!). Hansraj... they LITERALLY recycled an old KMC prelim paper, sponsored by Career Launcher! :D, and then had a GD not a quiz. Kunal blasted the fuccha in charge and we made our way to IP College. A maths quiz. Who were the contenders? Debashish(a.k.a DD) and Jaideep from NSIT, Kunal himself, another NSIT team and some dudes from BITS-Pilani (don't ask me what they were doing there, I don't know myself!). Nitesh B. Hasin and self gave it a shot and thanks to my history of quick thinking math puzzles (thanks Vinyas) and a downright weird paper, WE WON! The prize, Rs. 1000 *scratch* Rs. 750... there is corruption afoot. But that pales to the fact that a guy with seven supplis (including maths) and me beat Kunal, two teams from NSIT and some BITS dude. Nice!

Right. My "college" (alright, it's Amity :( Must You Mock Me??!!!!) is going to have a fest called ACT '07 sometime in Feb or March. I instantly went to the cultural committee (the announcement of the fest made me realize that there's a cultural committee in my "college"!) and demanded that I organize the quiz. The reply was, "Yeah, sure. We originally weren't even planning to have a quiz!". So, I hereby invite you'll to the ACT '07 Quiz, being organized by yours truly.
And here are my assurances:
1. I'll try to make it better than the sad affairs I've had to tolerate so far (except InnoVision, that was good; except for the last-minute, "oh-sorry, we forget to tell you, there are no prizes for second place" - you think this is frickin' Top Gun?! But the quiz was good). If it isn't, hey! At least it'll be better than DU*!
2. Absolutely NO rigging of the qualifying or final round. The audience prizes will be rigged to a tiny extent, however.
3. Seeing that we are soundly backed by an Interpol-wanted millionaire and are next-campus neighbors to Perot Systems and HCL, I hope that there will be good financial remunerations for ALL finalists (a KQA trend that has sadly, not caught up here)
4. Definite questions on the following topics: 1.HHGG 2.Sci-Tech 3.Tolkein 4.Alternative Rock 5.The Simpsons 6.Football 7.Wodehouse
5. No lame connection questions. There will be a connection round where the answers of the round will have a connect, not a round full of connects.

DU*...

What can I say about the "great" Delhi University*. There is no adjective in the title as I couldn't decide between, "DU*...PU!!!" or "Screw You, DU*!" or a plain "DU* sucks!" Is it a case of sour grapes? Wrong! Panache was a case of sour grapes, the DU* quizzes were just utter nonsense! First the rubbish at Hindu, followed by more poppycock at Daulat Ram and a joke at Venkys on the 30th to really seal it. Amateur nite, ladies and gentlemen. Silly questions which were un-friggin'-workable! Nimish's list of victims in his "50,000 Quiz" plan has increased(if he ever executes it!). Let's go one-by-one, shall we?
1. Hindu College. 29th. History Society Quiz.
No solo participation. I was stuck with some Hindu girl who seemed as interested in the quiz as I would be in a reality TV show. Nimish+Nitesh (team DON!, sorry Nimish) didn't make it. Unfortunately, I did. Final round. We're met with questions such as "In which year did construction of the Taj Mahal begin and end?" and "Where did the bombs in the London Bombings last summer explode?" I was in perennial second, with Maurya's team in the lead. Then something weird happened. The last two rounds ended up in such a way that one team (Maurya's) won with 24 points and the rest of us were on 18! No certi or prize. Fine; Go suck a neutron star, no0bs.
2. Daulat Ram. 10 teams in the qualifying. 8 teams in the final. Guess which two didn't make it? Here's a hint: the best two!
3. Venkys. A weird qualifying round with questions such as "What is the hindi-dubbed version of the Matrix called?" The answer is 'Mayajaal', folks but they insisted on 'Mahashaktimaan'! Whatever! The final round was filled with Ambiguous, Silly questions and a downright ridiculous argument that "We have a more precise answer!" Sorry mate, if you are unaware of the basics of quizzing, let me tell you that it's the team that gives the right answer FIRST who gets the points, not the precise to-the-dot, spelt correctly answer.

And yes, even in the good quizzes don't always expect to get your prize. Pradyumna, I'm still waiting...

To summarize; DU* quizzes are amateurish jokes organized by dolts who probably think that KBC is the know-all end-all of quizzing and invite "pros" such as self, who are drawn by the prestigious name of the college and the hope that the prestigious name will translate into a prestigious financial renumeration.
To summarize the summary; DU* quizzes should be attended IFF you know the guy hosting the quiz and even then don't have high hopes.

Venky Quiz...

Well, the Venky Quiz... what can I say? I turned up there only to realize that it's an amateurish Lit. quiz. Nimish and Me participated, nevertheless and in between constant wisecracks, jokes, Nimish's cellphone suddenly deciding to call me without Nimish's consent and answering Oscar Wilde for everything we didn't know, we won. The grand prize? 350 bucks! And 3 stupid, unheard of books. Anyways, Setu (a Venkian) assures me that the quiz on the 30th will be better. Lets hope so!

And yes, a warning. Never attend a Lit. Quiz at St. Stephen's unless you also have a uber-niche elitist attitude when it comes to reading. A Lit. quiz and not a single Hitchhiker's or Tolkein question!

Ramjas Quiz...

The quiz at Ramjas College, organized on Nov. 14th, was quite good. There were perhaps somewhere around 30 teams in the qualifying round from which 6 teams made it to the final. The quiz lasted over 5 rounds with the team from St.Stephens leading throughout. Towards the end, the team comprising of myself, Nimish Batra and Nitesh Bhasin (both from BVCOE) made a comeback, giving Stephens the target of 4 questions out of eight in one minute in the final buzzer round. With the clock ticking and barely 5 seconds left, the Stephanians figured out that Razia Sultan succeeded Illtumush to the Delhi Sultanate throne and walked away with first. The team that won Panache, from DCE, came third. As always, my menory fails me and I don't know their names. Last time, I swear!
The disappointing part was the lack of cash prizes and even certificates, due to sponsorship troubles, but the supposed prizes were 2500, 1500 and 1000. The questions and especially the audio questions were really good, though.
